By Ed Bagley Power Secret One: Do Not Fill Out Job Applications Job candidates should not fill out job applications because applications contain so much potentially incriminating and damaging information. While it is illegal to ask you your age, a business can legally ask you your salary history, how much you want to make, reasons why you left jobs, your medical history, and specific references. This information alone is worth much to a business but can only hurt you, the potential hire, 99% of the time. Job applications can be the "kiss of death" because the company (or organization) controls your information flow. They ask the questions and you are obliged to answer, or your possibility of being hired can be trashed. When you use a resume and cover letter, you control the information flow, you tell them what you want them to know, and nothing else. While it is never a good idea to claim an untruth about yourself, you can liberally practice the sins of omission. When you have a back problem, you want the company to know about it when you place an insurance claim as part of your benefit plan. When you reveal too much information too soon, you can create a seed of doubt with your potential employer. Once the interviewer or employer senses a seed of doubt, they begin checking for a chink in your armor, and who among us, if put under intense scrutiny, does not have a chink in his or her armor? Like a pit bulldog on the prowl, they search for something, anything, negative about you to validate their suspicion, whether their doubt is justified or not. You are then thrown upon the scrap heap of rejects, and they move on to another candidate. Any information about you that is a lightning rod should not be revealed, even when they demonstrate an indicated interest in you as a prospect, and you, in turn, are genuinely interested in the opportunity. Many potential hires read an ad in the classifieds and then approach the business with this introduction: "I read your ad in the Sunday paper (or online) for an Administrative Assistant (or whatever the position is) and would like to fill out an application." This approach misses the mark in that it invites filling out an application, which is a mistake. When you feel you must go to the business with your approach, use this language exactly: "I'm interested in your Administrative Assistant (or whatever the job is) position. Here is my resume." Then hand them your resume; it is hard not to take your resume when you are handing it to them. Give your resume and cover letter to the most important person you can reach. A decision maker is much more likely to take your resume, peruse it, decide to interview you, and set an appointment to do so. On occasion, he or she may even interview you on the spot. In any event, you want your resume--and not a job application-- in their hand. When applying for a public service position (such as a state job, or a classroom teacher position), filling out a job application will be mandatory. When put under stress and placed under a time constraint, candidates unwittingly and inadvertently rush through the process, putting down any answer that comes to mind. When confronted with this situation, never fill out the job application on scene. Take the application home, read the questions carefully, and think before you answer. When answering any question on the application, ask yourself this question: how could this answer appear negative, or damage my chances of getting an offer? Most businesses in the private sector appreciate a resume and cover letter far more than an application, as the resume generally gives more and better information about you (ever try to describe your duties and responsibilities on a job application in one line where only seven words will fit if you print in small letters?). You would not normally be filling out a job application in the private sector unless you are applying for the lowest of entry level positions. You should not be asked to fill out a job application at the management level, and if you are, there is something terribly wrong. Power Secret Two: The Most Important Factor in Writing Resumes Judgment is the most important factor in writing a resume. We can teach people a lot of things but there is at least one thing we cannot teach people: judgment. We develop judgment from the life experience of making judgments, and what experience shows us is that some people simply have better judgment than others. People without good judgment keep running into brick walls because they have not figured out how to climb over them, walk around them, dig under them, or blow them up and walk through. This reflects a lack of judgment. We raise our children to have a sense of right and wrong and to make good decisions when it counts. But try as we might, there comes that day and time when we are not there, and someone offers them cigarettes, or drugs, or something worse. At that point in time, we hope and pray that our child makes the right decision because the wrong decision might lead them down a road from which they may never return. Their decision involves judgment. They cannot acquire good judgment by you simply telling them what to do, or not to do; they also need modeling, the power of whatever influence you may have with them, and osmosis: the process of making judgments, recognizing the results of the judgments, and making better choices. Judgment is the most critical factor you are going to come to terms with in writing a resume, or judgment may be your most telling weakness when you go to the job market to test its effectiveness. Always remember that it is not just what you say, but how you say it that counts. By Chip Phelan If you look closely at the natural landscape, youll never see a large area populated by a single species. Why then would it make sense to plant a single crop in a field or in a section of your garden? It doesnt. Companion planting makes a lot of sense. Single crops may be easier to harvest, especially for commercial purposes, but the plants and the land both suffer for it. Farmers have learned that rotating their crops and allowing fields to rest with plants that can be turned back into the soil can lessen their dependence on fertilizers. That is only part of the solution to a healthy ecosystem and successful crop production. In nature plants constantly seek out symbiotic relationships with other plants and animals around them. We are only beginning to understand the workings of these relationships. Companion planting attempts to provide a more natural environment that will help your plants thrive. Native Americans throughout the western hemisphere were practicing companion planting when the Europeans landed. Maize (corn), squash and beans were referred to as The Three Sisters among many of the eastern nations when the first colonists arrived. In this situation the corn provides support for the beans and the squash suppresses weeds and keeps the soil cool and moist by virtue of its large leaves. This was the elementary school explanation and probably the first and last time most people gave companion planting much thought. Besides shade and structure companion planting provides much more remarkable benefits. My experience has found companion planting to be an effective means of organic pest control as well. Combining vegetables with herbs and flowers in the same growing vicinity accomplishes a few things, which I can attest to with relative certainty. By always having something in bloom in your garden you have a better chance of attracting beneficial insects into your garden. Herbs, flowers and even some weeds can deter some pests or act as trap plants to give pest insects something else to eat besides your vegetables. In some cases, companion plants are even thought to improve the flavor of their neighbors. Some companion plants that we have had good luck with in our gardens Radishes: Whether or not you like the taste of radishes they make good companions for many vegetables. They are a deterrent to most pest insects. We have had particular luck growing radishes with beans, cucumbers and members of the squash family. They seem to deter the various beetles that can decimate these crops. Radishes do not do well with members of the cabbage family. Onions: Members of the onion family also tend to benefit a variety plants. Carrots, beets, members of the cabbage family, lettuce and tomatoes all do well with onions. Peas and beans however are not so compatible with onions. Annual Herbs: Dill and basil seem to help our tomatoes. Basil is said to repel white fly and aphids. Dill seems to be one of many herbs and flowers to attract parasitic wasps. Parasitic wasps help control tomato hornworms by laying their eggs in the hornworms. The wasp larvae feed on the hornworms and kill them before they can do much damage. In general the more diversity in your garden, the more successful your efforts will be. By creating a garden in harmony with the natural environment you will benefit all the inhabitants living nearby, including yourself and your family. The soil condition Different soil has different water holding capacities. The different soil types also absorb water and dry out at different rate. For sandy soil, it is not able to retain much water but water can penetrate the soil quickly to reach the roots. As such, you have to water your lawn more frequently. On the other hand, clay soil holds tightly to water but it is poorly aerated. In this case, the water takes a long time to reach the roots. Therefore you have to apply more water slowly and evenly so that the soil has time to absorb it and let the water reach the roots. In general, lawns growing in clay soil do not need to be water frequently. Loamy soil falls between very sandy and heavy clay soils. It is adequately aerated and has reasonable water holding capacity. Water can reach the roots fairly quickly too. Most lawns are made up of more than one type of soil and thus it is advisable to pay attention to how your lawn soil is absorbing water and adjust accordingly. 2. The weather and climate In general, the hotter the weather, the more water your lawn needs. Thus you may have to water your lawn more often in the summer seasons than the spring seasons. The same rule applies if you live in an area that is windy and low in humidity. You can cut down the frequency of water if you live in an area with cooler temperatures and low wind. If the humidity is high or the sky is cloudy most of the time, you also do not have to water your lawn too often. If you live in an area with a lot of rain, you probably can get away without watering your lawn. 3. Amount of shade available A flat lawn that is fully exposed to sunlight will require more water. If there are trees in your lawn, you may water the lawn less often. However, the areas near the trees may require more water, as the tree roots will suck the ground dry very quickly. 4. The type of grass in your lawn There are two broad classifications of grasses warm-season and cool-season. Warm-season grasses can adapt to hot weather very well and generally require less water. An example will be Bermuda grass. Cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass usually require less water. However, there are some cool-season grasses can look bad from less than optimum watering and there are warm-season grass which can survive on little water. Thus it is advisable to find out the exact type of grass that your lawn has and gain a deeper understanding of its characteristics. 5. Cultural practice If your lawn is mowed short, then you need to water it more often.If you apply more fertilizers to your lawn, the grasses will also grow faster. This means that more water is required to facilitate the growth. The amount of water that your lawn need is usually affected by a combination of two or more of the factors mentioned above. You need to observe how your lawn reacts to your watering practice. By understanding the different factors that affect your lawn and observing your lawns reaction, you will be able to find out the optimum amount of water that your lawn needs to grow healthily.
